Brad Paisley Knows How to Put on a Concert…Awesome!

by Julie on August 30th, 2007

0203_brad_paisley_b.jpgConcerts are not just about good music anymore. I know, that sounds lame, but we live in an extrememly visual and technical world. When someone pays to be entertained, they want to be REALLY entertained. They want to hear good music and see it too. Here’s what Brad Paisley did at his concert. Man, I wish I could have been there!

Brad Paisley’s interest in visual storytelling sets the tone for his Bonfires & Amplifiers tour. USA Today reports that the video-savvy singer’s stage set is a couch potato’s dream with screens mounted everywhere you turn.

A 24-foot-wide LED screen is mounted behind the stage, while two smaller screens sit stage right and stage left, with projection screens hanging at both sides of the stage. More than 500 tube-shaped screens are suspended in five layers.

One of the most amazing moments occurs when Alison Krauss appears to take the stage to duet with Brad on “Whiskey Lullaby,” an effect achieved by using muted lighting, a two-camera shoot done before the tour and the stage-right screen. “The farther from the stage they are, the more people think Alison was really there,” Brad says.

Brad’s encore includes a sepia-tone silent film that was shot in one afternoon at his farm near Nashville, with Brad playing the local constable and his band members assorted ne’er-do-wells. Brad edited the film, inserted subtitles and added it to the show two days later.

The audience meets the band by way of the camera that goes backstage at every show to find out how the musicians spent their down time — trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube or playing Twister with local members of Brad’s fan club.

Finally, to personalize the show for each town, that morning a runner with a digital camera cruises by area watering holes to take photos which are cropped, zoomed and put into a PowerPoint presentation. When Brad sings his 2005 hit “Alcohol,” the crowd is treated to a slide show of local hangouts.

I love how he personalizes the show to each town. That shows that he cares about his fans. I would have paid big bucks to have seen him in my town.
